Overweight and Obesity

Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. A measure of obesity is the Body Mass Index (BMI).
How to calculate BMI.

  • An adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

Obesity and overweight substantially increase the risk of morbidity from hypertension; dyslipidemia; type 2 diabetes; coronary heart disease; stroke; gallbladder disease; osteoarthritis; sleep apnea and respiratory problems; and endometrial, breast, prostate, and colon cancers.
